Spring/Summer 2009:
Fall 2009/10:
The ‘Magnificence of the Tsars’ exhibition at the Victoria & Albert museum in London provided the inspiration to showcase Giambattista Valli’s opulent Gamme Rouge collection for Moncler, the luxury Italian sportswear brand, during the Paris pret-a-porter season.
Press and buyers descended down a narrow concrete staircase into the dungeons underneath Palais Garnier, the 19th century Paris opera-house, to discover a wonderland straight out of a fantasy L’Hermitage.
Valli’s dazzling vision transformed the Moncler down-filled jacket into crinolined ballgowns, hooded opera-cloaks and Dr Zhivago-style jackets – all fit for a tsarina.
Other jackets and coats were trimmed with fox or chinchilla – and then printed with the markings of the same fur; still more were embellished with crystal and stone jewels. Two white steeds (Fuego and Flash) snorted and stamped in a candle-lit niche.
Gorgeous hunks (male models), dressed as Hussars and Cossacks, in costumes on loan from the opera house, leant against concrete pillars, adding to the atmosphere, or lolled on camp-beds, reading books. The ‘officers’ beds, however, were far more luxurious than anything you would ever find in a barracks – made in satin, they were lined with fox, and, yes, they will be available to buy. Perfect for the chalet in Gstaad – or even a de luxe camping trip?
